Lauren Wilder

Length of Time at CMC:
5 months

Education/experience:
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Violin Performance from Mills College in Oakland, Ca; I studied briefly under Ladislau Horvath, conductor and solo concert master of the Solisti Fiorentini in Florence, Italy; I've also spent a few years involved in musical theater in Spokane.

What do you do here:
I do my best to keep the amount of music snobbery and utter silliness up to regulations. Wouldn't want to break any health code laws.

Your instrument/area of specialization:
14 years of violin and I've still got lots to learn. I casually plunk around on piano, guitar, mandolin, and the ever-prestigious car-singing, but my most favoritest instrumentation in the entire world is the string quartet.

Favorite Composer:
Igor Stravinsky, for starters--he conducts with his fists. And Stephen Sondheim, who's more of a sucker for wordplay than I could ever hope to be. And Joanna Newsom, because Mills alum gotta stick together.

Why music?
Because I live for emotion and, maybe more than that, for communication. "Every work of art is one half of a secret handshake, a challenge that seeks the password." —Michael Chabon

Current musical endeavors:
Currently, I'm exploring the world of music instruction, offering violin lessons at CMC. I'm also pursuing a volunteer tutoring spot with Seattle Music Partners.
